The Challenge
Following the De.Coded project, Tenacity Works faced the task of elevating the app experience for the ALTA Los Angeles Human Atlas app. The primary challenges included:
- Enhancing the image recognition capabilities to achieve near-perfect accuracy across all portrait scans.
- Creating a more spacious and refined user experience to accommodate the dense information within the app.
- Ensuring seamless integration with physical media, including books and exhibition prints.
- Developing a standalone exploration feature for users without access to physical materials.
The Solution
Tenacity Works developed a cutting-edge interactive app that builds upon the successes of De.Coded while introducing significant improvements. In a focused 10-week development period, our team delivered:
- Advanced Image Recognition: Leveraging TensorFlow.js and Google’s TeachableMachine, we rebuilt the image recognition stack from the ground up, achieving nearly 100% accuracy in facial recognition across the entire project.
- Enhanced User Experience: We crafted a cleaner, more spacious interface that allows users to fully appreciate the extraordinary candidates, their stories, and images, despite the high density of information.
- Fully Content Manageable Push Notification System: We developed a sophisticated push notification infrastructure across both iOS and Android versions of the app, enabling dynamic content updates and targeted user engagement without requiring app updates.
- Seamless Integration: Extensive testing ensured flawless interaction between the app and physical media, including books and exhibition prints.
- Standalone Exploration: The app was designed to allow users to explore the full project without the need to scan portraits, broadening its accessibility.
- Cutting-Edge Technology: Utilizing Expo for core functionalities and camera/face detection, alongside TensorFlow.js and TeachableMachine for model training, the app represents the forefront of mobile development and machine learning integration.
Conclusion
The ALTA Los Angeles Human Atlas app stands as a testament to Tenacity Works’ expertise in creating innovative, user-centric digital experiences. By successfully addressing the challenges of the project and building upon the foundations laid by De.Coded, we delivered a product that seamlessly bridges the physical and digital aspects of Marcus Lyon’s Human Atlas series. The app not only enhances the exploration of Los Angeles’ change-makers but also contributes significantly to Lyon’s broader artistic and social impact goals, holding a mirror up to society and encouraging audiences to question their own roles and responsibilities towards their communities.
