Designing for Localisation: Chinese and Arabic

In the era of global digitalisation, mastering the art of designing for localisation ensures our content resonates with audiences worldwide. At Tenacity Works, we’ve embraced the complexities of designing for localisation, focusing on creating inclusive and accessible content. This journey has taken us through the unique challenges and nuances of localising for Chinese and Arabic-speaking audiences, offering invaluable insights into the intricacies of adapting digital content for diverse cultures.

Understanding the Importance of Designing for Localisation

Localisation extends beyond simple translation; it’s about culturally and linguistically adapting your content to resonate with your target audience. It’s a crucial aspect of UX/UI design and WordPress development, involving everything from layout adjustments to coding for right-to-left (RTL) languages. For those of us at Tenacity Works, designing for localisation means ensuring that every element of our digital content is thoughtful and accessible, regardless of where our audience is based or what language they speak.

The Pillars of UX and UI in Localisation

In the realm of UX and UI, designing for localisation is paramount. It’s not just about translating text; it’s about reimagining how content is presented and interacted with across different cultures. For instance, our work with Chinese audiences required a deep dive into character-based design, ensuring readability and cultural relevance. Meanwhile, the challenge of Arabic localisation pushed us to rethink navigation and layout from an RTL perspective, a fundamental shift that affected every aspect of our WordPress development process.

Case Studies in Designing for Localisation

Adapting for Chinese Audiences

Our approach to designing for localization for the Chinese market goes beyond simple language translation; it’s an immersive process that integrates cultural nuances into every aspect of design and development. A cornerstone of this approach was our work for MWC Shanghai, a premier technology show drawing over 80,000 attendees, which we proudly supported from 2016 to 2019.

For MWC Shanghai, our challenge was not only to translate content but to create a digital experience that resonated with a tech-savvy Chinese audience. This task required a deep dive into the cultural preferences that influence design in China, from the symbolism of colours to the selection of typography that would not only be visually appealing but also enhance readability and user engagement.

In WordPress, this ambition translated into a meticulous process of selecting themes and plugins that could support the complex requirements of a multilingual and culturally diverse audience. We customized the website to cater to local preferences, ensuring a seamless and intuitive user experience that felt familiar to our Chinese audience. Moreover, we implemented targeted SEO strategies tailored for China’s digital ecosystem, optimizing the site for local search engines like Baidu, which demanded a thorough understanding of local SEO practices and consumer behaviour.

The success of the MWC Shanghai website underscored our capacity to handle large-scale projects requiring sophisticated localization strategies. It showcased our expertise not just in language translation but in the comprehensive adaptation of content to meet the specific cultural and technological needs of the Chinese market.

The Arabic Localisation Challenge

Localizing content for Arabic-speaking users presented a distinctive set of challenges, particularly the need to support right-to-left (RTL) text. This need became especially pronounced in our recent project for Bexprt, a leading AWS consultant in the Middle East. Their expertise in cloud solutions meant that the website had to not only cater to the linguistic and cultural nuances of the Arabic-speaking audience but also communicate complex technical content in an accessible and engaging manner.

For Bexprt’s Arabic site version, this necessitated a comprehensive overhaul of our WordPress sites. We embarked on a detailed process of theme customization to ensure full RTL text support, adapting every element—from navigation menus to content layout—to align with Arabic reading patterns. This effort extended to ensuring compatibility with RTL scripts, a task that involved intricate adjustments to CSS and JavaScript to flip layouts, align text correctly, and mirror UI elements to ensure a coherent and intuitive user experience for Arabic readers.

Moreover, the project underscored the importance of a nuanced approach to localization that goes beyond simple translation. It was about creating a digital space that felt native to Arabic-speaking users, with considerations for local SEO strategies that leveraged local search engine behaviours and user expectations. Ensuring the site was optimized for search engines like Google and local directories was crucial in positioning Bexprt as a leader in AWS consulting within the Middle Eastern market.

This work with Bexprt highlighted our ability to tackle the unique challenges of Arabic localization head-on, showcasing our expertise in not just managing RTL text support but also in understanding and implementing the cultural and technical nuances required to engage effectively with Arabic-speaking audiences.
