What’s New In WordPress 6.0?

WordPress 6.0 (Arturo) is the second major release of 2022 and it comes with a host of new features and enhancements that make it even easier to use and more powerful than ever before. In this post, we’ll take a look at some of the key enhancements and new features in WordPress 6.0, including full site editing enhancements, improved performance, improved accessibility and block editor enhancements.

Full site editing enhancements

One of the biggest new features in WordPress 6.0 is the full site editing experience. With this new feature, you can now edit your entire site, not just individual posts and pages, using the block editor. This allows you to easily create custom layouts, add and rearrange sections, and design your site exactly the way you want it.

Improved performance

In addition to the full site editing experience, WordPress 6.0 also includes a number of performance improvements that make it faster and more efficient than ever before. For example, the block editor has been optimized to load faster and use less memory, and the WordPress core has been streamlined to reduce the number of database queries and improve overall performance. These improvements may seem small, however, every bit helps improve page load time, which ultimately allows for a more improved user experience on your site.

Improved accessibility

Another key enhancement in WordPress 6.0 is improved accessibility. WordPress has always been committed to making its platform accessible to users with disabilities, and WordPress 6.0 continues this tradition with a number of accessibility improvements, bringing it closer to WCAG 2.0 AA compliance. Here are some of the more notable accessibility improvements:

  • Blocks with placeholder elements now have better improved tabbing.
  • Screen reader-related improvements make it easier for publishers who use screen readers to navigate through the blocks.
  • Announce search results in the Block Manager.
  • Read the description for blocks with a placeholder setup.
  • Post title will be used as an alt tag for the featured image if no alt is provided.
  • VoiceOver is now used to read your placeholder descriptions.

Block editor enhancements

WordPress 6.0 also includes a number of improvements to the block editor. What stands out:

  • Block locking controls, this setting saves any changes that you make and restricts edits from other users.
  • New keyboard shortcuts, by typing in “[[page title]]”, you can automatically insert a link. When holding down the Shift button and clicking on multiple blocks, you can reposition them on the list.
  • New responsive stacking blocks, allows you to choose between row or stack display. The blocks now include additional styling settings for typography, borders, colours, alignment, spacing and background colours.

Overall, WordPress 6.0 is a major update that brings a number of exciting new features and enhancements to the platform. Whether you’re a new user looking to create a beautiful and functional website, or an experienced WordPress user looking to take your site to the next level, WordPress 6.0 has something to offer.
