Outlining digital’s role in a better future

Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) can provide solutions for some of the most urgent problems we face for people and the planet by 2030. These challenges are laid out in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which provide a global framework for addressing them.

The Global Enabling Sustainability Initiative (GeSI) provides a platform for ICT’s role – ‘digital with a purpose’ – in this framework, using the SDGs as a central reference for action.

The Problem

The opportunity for ICT to play a positive role is enormous, but articulating a comprehensive, accessible view of the problems we face and the possible global solutions that ICT can facilitate is no small feat. Digital technologies could help humanity meet the 2030 goals, but it will take both the ICT sector and the ‘partner sectors’ that deploy these technologies to put this ‘digital with a purpose’ at the centre of who they are and what they do. The report has to communicate a substantially enhanced understanding of how actions lead to impact in achieving the SDGs, be they the actions of government, businesses, NGOs or citizens.

The Solution

Our report’s clearly articulated aims and approach dovetail neatly with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, explaining the initiative within the context of the SDGs.

By using a modular, multi-layered information structure and key messages that provide summaries and infographics for the scanning reader and more detailed specifics for interested specialists needing more information. Case studies of relevant projects by industry leaders like AT&T, Deutsche Telekom and others are presented in the same consistent visual style and language, making sure the content is accessible yet nuanced throughout. We then extended the final paper report into an engaging four-minute overview film and mobile-friendly website, expanding its footprint while keeping its consistent, intuitive visual shorthand.
