Turning lofty goals into meaningful action

Explaining the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals

The SDGs in Action app was developed to highlight the Sustainable Development Goals – the world’s to-do list to end poverty, reduce inequalities and tackle climate change, and inspire people to help in whatever way they can towards making a better future for all of us.

The project was sponsored by the GSMA, which represents the interests of nearly 800 mobile operators worldwide, and Project Everyone, a non-profit global campaign to spread the messaging of the SDGs.

The Problem

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals are admirable but can be quite a mouthful for the uninitiated. How do you make these global, complex ambitions accessible to the layman and, more importantly, inspire informed and meaningful action?  How do you educate the audience and provide understanding of how actions lead to the achievement of the SDGs, be they the actions of government, businesses, NGOs or citizens?

The report had to address the climate crisis as one that transcends geography and local interests and is an issue that nation-states must commit to, but with truly integrated and innovative solutions.

The Solution

Working with the United Nations, the GSMA and Project Everyone, we developed an app to publicise the goals and encourage users to get involved and take action. The app features:

  • Detailed information about each of the 17 goals, including targets, explanatory videos, key facts and figures, and suggestions on how you can help.
  • The latest sustainable development news from around the world, and how innovation is helping to achieve the goals.
  • The ability to choose what goals are important to you and receive updates.
  • Find or create actions and events near you that support the goals, and work with others.

The app is available in all six official UN languages: Arabic, English, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish.
